I've always been fascinated by the space between disciplines.
Science and business.
Universities and industry.
Researchers and entrepreneurs.
Investors and inventors.
Public institutions and private enterprise.
Most people build careers within one of those worlds; I've spent mine moving between them.
When I began my career as a research scientist, I thought my career would revolve around discovery itself. I have always loved the process of asking questions, testing ideas, and uncovering how nature really works. Science taught me a way of thinking that has never left: be curious, question assumptions, follow evidence, and stay comfortable with uncertainty.
Over time, however, I became just as interested in another question; Why do some extraordinary discoveries transform the world while others never leave the laboratory?
The answer, I came to believe, has surprisingly little to do with the quality of the science alone.
Great ideas need great ecosystems.
They need investors who understand risk. Universities willing to think beyond traditional boundaries. Entrepreneurs who can build organizations around discoveries. Companies prepared to invest for the long term. Governments willing to create the necessary conditions for innovation. Above all, they need people who can help these very different communities understand one another.
That realization changed the direction of my career.
I stopped thinking only about individual discoveries and started thinking about the environments that allow discovery to flourish.
Since then I've had the privilege of building biotechnology companies, helping establish investment funds, creating innovation programs, designing partnerships between universities and industry, teaching graduate students, mentoring founders, and working with organizations that are trying to solve some of humanity's hardest problems.
At first glance those experiences seem unrelated; to me they've always been the same job.
Building bridges.
One of the unexpected advantages of my career is that I've never stopped speaking the language of science. I still enjoy sitting with researchers to understand a new technology at its earliest stages. But I also enjoy sitting in boardrooms, discussing investment strategy, public policy, or long-term institutional partnerships. The interesting work happens when those conversations begin to overlap.
I don't think that innovation is primarily a technological challenge.
I think it's a human one.
The future of biotechnology won't simply be determined by better AI, more powerful computers, or new therapeutic platforms. It will depend on whether we can create organizations, partnerships, and cultures capable of bringing extraordinary people together around difficult problems.
That's the work I enjoy the most.
Building those connections.
Creating those environments.
Helping ambitious ideas find the people who can move them forward.
Teaching has become a natural extension of that philosophy. I want young scientists to leave the laboratory with more than technical expertise. I want them to understand how ideas become companies, how discoveries become medicines, and how communication, leadership, and entrepreneurship are every bit as important as experimental design.
Outside of work, I spend a good deal of time running.
I didn't discover marathon running until midlife, and after recovering from prostate cancer it took on an entirely different meaning. Endurance has become less about competition and more about perspective; progress, whether in science, business, or life, is rarely dramatic. More often it's the result of showing up consistently, remaining curious, and continuing forward when the finish line is still a long way off.
If there's a common thread running through everything I've done, it's this:
I'm interested in building the conditions under which remarkable things become possible.
Sometimes that's a partnership.
Sometimes it's an investment fund.
Sometimes it's a company.
Sometimes it's simply a conversation between two people who hadn't realized they should be talking to each other.
Those moments are where I think the future begins.
